If there’s one thing I absolutely adore, it’s creating beautiful fall wreaths. There’s something about the vibrant colors and the cozy feel of autumn that makes these wreaths some of my favorite projects to dive into. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a beginner looking to add a touch of fall charm to your home, these 12 tips will help you create stunning fall wreaths that you’ll be proud to display. So, grab your crafting supplies, pour yourself a warm cup of coffee or apple cider, and let’s get creative together!
1. Start with a Sturdy Base
Begin with a strong wreath form. Grapevine wreaths are a popular choice, but you can also use foam or wire bases depending on your design preference. Personally, I love starting with a grapevine base because it already has that natural, rustic look that sets the tone for the entire wreath.
2. Select Complementary Colors
Choose a color palette that reflects the beauty of fall. Think warm hues like oranges, deep reds, yellows, and browns. These traditional colors capture the essence of autumn and create a comforting and familiar aesthetic.
However, don’t shy away from experimenting with contemporary colors versus trendy color combinations to give your wreath a unique twist. Contemporary colors, such as muted greens, soft grays, and even deep navy blues, can add a modern edge to your wreath while still resonating with the fall season. On the other hand, trendy color combinations like rose gold paired with blush pinks, or even incorporating metallics like copper and gold, can make your wreath really stand out and have “wow” factor.
You can mix and match traditional warm tones with contemporary or trendy accents to strike a perfect balance. A deep burgundy ribbon paired with soft ivory florals can create a stunning contrast, or adding a few turquoise berries amid the earthy tones can inject some unexpected vibrancy. Let your creativity flow, and remember that the right color palette can truly bring your wreath to life!
3. Incorporate Natural Elements
Every now and then I like to add natural elements such as pinecones, acorns, and dried leaves to fall wreaths. These items can bring authenticity and texture to your wreath. A weekend walk in your backyard, or in the park can double as a scavenger hunt, searching for these little treasures to incorporate into different fall wreath designs.
4.Β Use a Mixture of High Quality and Budget Faux Florals and Greenery
Artificial flowers and greenery can provide that lush look without wilting so they are definitely my go-to when creating fall wreaths. Sunflowers, peonies, mums, and faux pumpkins can add that perfect fall touch. When we make fall wreaths for our Flower Friday Show, we often mix high-quality faux elements with some less expensive florals from Walmart and Dollar Tree to achieve a blend of practicality and beauty.
5. Layer Your Materials
Start by layering your larger items and then fill in with smaller accents and decorations. This creates a more balanced and full appearance. Think of it like decorating a cake; you want to add the big, show-stopping elements first and then fill in the smaller details.
6. Add Texture
Incorporate different textures by using various materials like burlap ribbon, fabric leaves, and even textured sprays. Mixing textures adds depth to your design. I often find myself rummaging through craft and fabric stores for unique ribbons and materials that can add an unexpected twist to the fall wreaths I create.
7. Play with Different Shapes
Who says wreaths have to always be perfectly round? Consider oval, crescent, or square shapes for a modern take on the traditional wreath. Experimenting with different forms can bring a fresh and unexpected flair to your front door.
8. Use Scented Accents
Enhance your fall wreath with scented elements like cinnamon sticks, dried oranges, or scented pinecones. These not only add a charming rustic look but also infuse your home with the delightful aromas of autumn. There’s nothing like the comforting scent of cinnamon or citrus to make your space feel warm and inviting as you welcome guests or simply enjoy a cozy evening at home. However, keep in mind this is best for personal use, as some people may be sensitive to strong smells if you sell your wreaths or give them as gifts.
9. Use a Variety of Bows and Ribbons
Experiment with different types and sizes of bows and ribbons. Wired ribbon bows are particularly effective as they hold their shape well. I find so much joy in creating the perfect bow to go on a wreath; it’s like the cherry on top of a sundaeβa little detail that completes the whole look. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different patterns and textures. For example, a plaid bow can complement a rustic wreath wonderfully, while a glossy satin or velvet ribbon can add a touch of elegance. You can also layer multiple ribbons to create a fuller, more intricate bow. Trust me, the right bow can elevate your wreath from lovely to absolutely stunning.
10. Personalize It
Add a monogram, special sign, or a family name to give your wreath a personal touch. This small detail can make your wreath even more special. I love gifting personalized and sentimental wreaths to friends and family; it’s a thoughtful touch that brings a smile to their faces.
11. Secure Everything Well
Ensure all elements are securely attached. Use hot glue, floral wire, or even zip ties as needed to keep everything in place. It’s so disappointing when elements start to fall off, so I always do a little βshake testβ to make sure everything is firmly attached and lightly pull on my florals to make sure they are good and attached. I then use my hair dryer to blow lightly over the entire wreath to get rid of any excess wisps of glue, or “glue boogers”, as I like to call them
12. Keep It Balanced
Step back and look at your creation from a distance to ensure it’s balanced. Adjust any elements that seem out of place. Sometimes I even take a picture of the wreath and look at it on my phone to spot any areas that may need tweaking.
Creating a fall wreath can be a wonderful way to celebrate the changing seasons and add a cozy touch to your home. Each wreath I make becomes a cherished memory, reminding me of the beauty and warmth of autumn.
