When it comes to making wreaths, bows add that extra flair and beauty to an already gorgeous design. Whether you’re crafting for holiday charm, a festive occasion, or simply adding some pizzaz to your door, bows are an essential touch. With the Bowdabra Bow Maker, creating intricate and stunning bows has never been easier or more fun! In this blog post, I’ll guide you step-by-step on how to use the Bowdabra Bow Maker to make the perfect bow for your wreath. Let’s get crafting!
Materials You’ll Need:
- Bowdabra Bow Maker: The star of our show! (You can purchase a Bowdabra Bow Maker HERE.)
- Floral Wire: This will secure your bow.
- Wired Ribbon: Choose any ribbon that suits the theme of your wreath. Here is our favorite ribbon shop!
- Scissors: For cutting the ribbon.
- Wreath Base: Grapevine, foam, or any other type you prefer.
Step-by-Step Guide:
Step 1: Set Up Your Bowdabra
First things first, you’ll need to set up your Bowdabra Bowmaker. Place it on a steady surface and get your bow wire ready. Cut a generous length of wire (approximately 18-24 inches) and fold it in half. Place the folded wire into the slot on the Bowdabra, ensuring that the loop end is pointing outwards and the tails are hanging on either side.
Step 2: Choose Your Ribbon and Cut Tails
Selecting your ribbon is where you can let your creativity shine. Whether you prefer a single color, a festive pattern, or a mix of textures, the sky’s the limit! Standard ribbon sizes like 1-2.5 inches wide work well, but feel free to experiment. Once chosen, if you would like to add tails to your bow, go ahead and cut the tails of your ribbon to the desired length and place into the Bowdabra, making sure that they are centered.
Step 3: Create the First Loops
With your ribbon in hand, pinch the first piece and place it into the Bowdabra slot over the bow wire. This will be the center loop or the “knot” of your bow, so make sure it’s secure. Then, start creating your loops.
Determine the size of your loop (typically 4-6 inches is a good start for wreaths), pinch the ribbon, and place it into the Bowdabra, allowing it to form a loop. Move the ribbon across to the opposite side, and repeat the process to create another loop. Continue back and forth, creating an equal number of loops on each side.
Step 4: Add More Ribbon Layers (Optional)
For more volume and pizzazz, you can add layers of different ribbons. Simply place additional ribbons on top of the previous ones in the Bowdabra and follow the same looping process. Mixing different ribbons can add texture and visual interest to your bow.
Step 5: Secure the Bow
Once you’ve achieved the desired fullness and number of loops, take the two tails of the bow wire and pull them through the looped end, tightening around the center of your ribbon bundle. Pull it tight to secure before removing it from the Bowdabra. Twist the bow wire to keep everything snug.
Step 6: Fluff and Shape Your Bow
This is where your bow comes to life! Fluff out the loops by gently arranging and pulling them to create a full, round shape. Adjust the loops and tails as needed to make sure everything looks symmetrical and beautiful.
Step 7: Attach the Bow to Your Wreath
Use the remaining wire tails to attach the bow to your wreath base. Secure it tightly by wrapping the wires around the wreath frame or hot-gluing it in place, ensuring that it stays put.
Step 8: Finish with Extra Touches
To add even more personality to your bow, you can tag on some extra elements like faux flowers, berries, or ornaments. Simply enhance your bow with these elements, either by hot-gluing or threading through with wire.
Tips for the Perfect Bow:
- Mix Different Ribbon Textures: Combining satin with burlap or lace can create beautiful contrasts.
- Use Wired Ribbon: This makes your loops easier to shape and will hold their shape better over time.
- Vary Loop Sizes: Mixing larger and smaller loops can add dimension to your bow.
- Fall Back on Classic Styles: For beginners, sticking to classic styles like the traditional bow or the double loop can help achieve a polished look.
Crafting with the Bowdabra Bowmaker transforms complex bow-making into an enjoyable and straightforward process. Creating a bow for your wreath is no longer something left for the pros—it’s something you can do with some simple steps and a bit of creativity.
