Hey there, sweet friends!
If you’re looking for a festive way to celebrate America’s birthday, we’ve got the perfect DIY for you! Today we’re showing you how to make a Patriotic Grapevine Crescent Wreath that’s full of bold color, sparkle, and classic charm. This design is a showstopper — and y’all, it’s easier to make than it looks!
We’re using red roses, blue ranunculus, small patriotic flowers, glittery star picks, and a gorgeous red, white, and blue bow. The best part? This design follows a crescent (or “C” shape) style that adds elegance and flair to your front door or porch.
This one’s perfect for Memorial Day, Independence Day, or really anytime you want to show off that American pride!
Let’s walk through it step-by-step so you can make your own!
Supplies You’ll Need
Here’s what we used to create our crescent-style patriotic wreath:
- 14–18″ grapevine wreath base (we used a round grapevine and worked it into a “C” shape design)
- Red roses (for that bold patriotic pop!)
- Blue ranunculus (these add depth and contrast)
- Small red and blue filler flowers (to fill in and soften)
- Glitter star picks (because every patriotic wreath needs some sparkle ✨)
- Button fern greenery (we love the natural movement this adds)
- Red, white, and blue wired ribbon (for the big bow!)
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Wire cutters
- Floral wire or pipe cleaners
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Start with Your Bow
We always say it’s best to build your design around your bow, and that’s especially true with a crescent wreath. Start by making a large red, white, and blue bow using 2.5″ or 1.5″ wired ribbon. You can use a ribbon with stars, stripes, or a fun patriotic pattern — whatever makes your heart happy!
Place the bow at the 10 o’clock position on your grapevine wreath and secure it with floral wire or pipe cleaners. Make sure the tails of the bow drape naturally down the side of the wreath, helping guide the direction of your florals.
2. Add Your Greenery Base
Now it’s time to build that crescent shape using greenery. We love using button fern greenery here because it has great texture and movement. Tuck the stems into the grapevine at an upward angle from the bow toward the top right, and downward from the bow toward the bottom left.
You’re basically framing the “C” shape with your greenery.
Tip: Use hot glue to secure each piece, and layer the greenery in the direction you want your florals to flow.
3. Insert Your Red Roses
Next up, it’s time for those bold red roses! These are your main focal flowers, so place them first to set your structure. We suggest using 3–5 roses, evenly spaced within the greenery — a few above the bow and a few below.
Push the stems into the grapevine, and hot glue them in place for extra security. You want the roses to sit slightly forward, so they really stand out.
4. Add the Blue Ranunculus
Tuck your blue ranunculus around the red roses to build out that classic red, white, and blue palette. These add gorgeous contrast and help balance the boldness of the red.
Try to work in odd numbers (3 or 5) and stagger them so your eye flows through the design.
5. Fill in with Small Patriotic Flowers
Now it’s time to add your filler flowers. Use small red and blue flowers to fill in any gaps, soften the look, and add more dimension. These help tie the colors together and make your wreath look full and lush without feeling heavy.
Scatter them lightly throughout the greenery, especially near the ends of your “C” shape to draw the eye outward.
6. Add Sparkle with Glitter Star Picks
What’s a patriotic wreath without a little sparkle?
Tuck in a few glitter star picks throughout the design — we placed ours just above and below the bow, and sprinkled a few near the top and bottom of the crescent. These catch the light beautifully and add that extra bit of magic!
