Spring has always been one of our favorite seasons for wreaths and door swags. The fresh colors, the blooms, and the feeling of new beginnings inspire so much creativity. Recently, we created a special inside-out spring door swag, and we wanted to share the process with you because it’s a fun and unique twist on a traditional door arrangement.

If you’d like to watch us make it step by step, check out our video here: Watch on YouTube. You can follow along and see exactly how we layered the ribbons, florals, and greenery to create this beautiful design.

This inside-out design allows you to enjoy it both from the inside of your home and from the outside of your door.

Here’s what we used to create this swag:

  • Ribbon: 4-inch wired ribbon for the base, and 1.5-inch wired ribbon for the center detail
  • Florals: Spring florals from Michaels, in soft pastel colors
  • Greenery: Lush greenery from Michaels
  • Glue: A strong craft glue suitable for ribbons and floral arrangements
  • Scissors or wire cutters: For trimming ribbon and stems

The swag measures 72 inches in length, giving it a dramatic, elegant look for any door.

Step 1: Creating a Wider Base With Ribbon

To give this door swag a fuller look, we started with 4-inch wired ribbon as the main base. But instead of using a single ribbon, we glued two 4-inch ribbons side by side, creating a wider foundation.

This simple trick makes the base look luxurious without adding bulk. A wider base allows the florals and greenery to sit nicely, making the entire swag look polished and professional.

Next, we added a 1.5-inch wired ribbon down the center, which helps tie the design together visually and adds a decorative dimension. The combination of wide and narrow ribbons creates a layered, textured effect that is subtle but impactful.

Step 2: Cutting the Ribbon

Since this is a long door swag, we cut the ribbons to 72 inches. The long length is perfect for a standard size door. If you have a larger door, you may need to cut your ribbons longer.

A tip we always follow is to cut slightly longer than you think you’ll need. It’s easier to trim later than to extend the ribbons after they’re glued.

Step 3: Arranging the Florals

The beauty of this swag comes from how we positioned the flowers. We wanted it to be an inside-out design, meaning it looks gorgeous whether you are inside your home or outside at the door.

We placed floral arrangements on both ends of the swag, leaving the center open. This creates a natural flow and allows the greenery and ribbon to shine.

The florals we used were classic spring blooms from Michaels, including soft pinks, whites, and yellows. We arranged them to be lush but not overpowering, giving the piece an elegant balance.

Step 4: Adding the Greenery

Greenery is what gives this swag life and texture. We used a variety of Michaels greenery stems and tucked them around the floral clusters and along the ribbon base.

We glued the stems carefully so they wouldn’t shift, but you could also use floral wire if you prefer extra security. When layering greenery, start with the larger leaves first, then fill in with smaller sprigs to create a full, flowing look.

Step 5: Gluing and Securing Everything

Once the ribbon, flowers, and greenery were in place, we carefully glued each section to make sure nothing would move or shift. Using strong craft glue designed for ribbon and floral work is key.

Take your time during this step. Press each piece firmly into place and hold for a few seconds. This ensures the swag stays beautiful through both indoor and outdoor display.

Step 6: Displaying the Inside-Out Swag

Because this swag is inside-out, it’s the perfect way to create a beautiful arrangement that you can enjoy inside our home and outside. The two floral clusters at each end create a balanced design that is equally stunning from either perspective.

We love how this arrangement makes a statement without overwhelming the space. It is elegant, fresh, and the perfect way to welcome spring.

Tips for Creating Your Own Inside-Out Door Swag

  1. Use wired ribbons: Wired ribbon holds shape better and creates a polished look.
  2. Double up the base ribbon: Gluing two ribbons side by side makes the swag wider and more luxurious.
  3. Layer flowers and greenery: Start with larger elements first, then fill in gaps with smaller pieces.
  4. Consider perspective: Since this is inside-out, make sure both ends are visually appealing.
  5. Glue carefully: A secure glue job ensures your swag lasts longer, even outside.

This inside-out door swag is one of our favorite spring projects because it combines elegance with functionality. It’s a statement piece for your home, but it also teaches techniques that can be used for other wreaths or swags, such as:

  • Creating a wider ribbon base for fullness
  • Layering different ribbon widths for texture
  • Arranging florals for two-sided enjoyment

Projects like this are both fun to make and versatile in their display.
