Alright, let’s get to crafting!
What You’ll Need to Make This Fall Swag
Here’s everything you’ll want to have on hand before starting your swag:
- A grapevine swag base (find it on Amazon here: swag base link)
- Fall grasses or picks in warm colors like orange, golden yellow, deep burgundy, and rustic green
- A bow, we used a fun orange and white checked ribbon for a pop of color
- Zip ties or floral wire
- Wire cutters and scissors
- A hot glue gun, or even better, our Grace Monroe Home Glue Skillet (a game changer for floral design and securing stems!)
That’s it, just a few basic supplies and you’ll be ready to create something gorgeous.
Step 1: Prep Your Grapevine Base
The grapevine swag base is really the secret to this project, it gives you an instant shape to work with. Ours came from Amazon, and it’s sturdy, lightweight, and perfect for layering in your fall stems.
Lay your swag base flat on your workspace and give it a quick once-over. Sometimes little grapevine pieces stick out, so trim those or tuck them in before you get started. This will make arranging your stems easier.
Step 2: Start With the Grass
Here’s where the fun begins! We used fall grass stems in rustic orange, golden yellow, and green tones. These are great because they give movement, height, and texture to the swag.
Begin by placing your first stems at the top center of your grapevine base, letting them extend outward. Then do the same on the bottom half, letting those stems extend downward. This creates that full, flowing shape that makes a swag so eye-catching.
Use zip ties or floral wire to secure the stems in place. Don’t be afraid to let the grasses stick out and have a little “wild” movement, that’s what makes it look natural and festive!
Step 3: Build Up the Layers
Once your base grasses are in place, keep adding more stems until your swag looks nice and full. Mix different shades of fall grass together for a layered effect.
We like to work from the center outward, alternating colors and textures so everything looks balanced. Step back every so often to make sure your swag has an even flow on both sides.
Remember, the beauty of this project is that it doesn’t have to be perfect, fall décor should feel organic, natural, and welcoming.
Step 4: Add the Bow
Now it’s time to add some personality!
We chose a big, cheerful orange and white checked ribbon for our bows. The bold pattern pops against the grasses and instantly adds charm.
Make your bow as big or as simple as you’d like, and then attach it securely to the center of your swag with floral wire or a zip tie. Let the tails of the ribbon drape down into the grasses for a soft, finished look.
Step 5: Secure and Fluff
Once your grass and bow are in place, give everything a good fluffing. Spread out the grass stems so they aren’t clumped together, and adjust the bow tails so they flow nicely.
If you have any loose stems that feel wobbly, secure them with a bit of floral wire or a dab of hot glue.
This step is all about making sure your swag looks balanced, full, and polished.

Where to Hang Your Fall Swag
One of the best things about this project is how versatile it is. Here are a few of our favorite ways to use it:
- On your front door as a cheerful welcome for guests
- Above your fireplace mantel to bring fall charm indoors
- On a large interior wall as seasonal wall décor
- As a banister accent if you’re decorating a staircase for fall
- Even outdoors on a garden gate or fence for rustic curb appeal
Wherever you hang it, your fall swag is sure to make a statement!
There are so many reasons we adore this swag. First, it’s affordable, just a grapevine base, a few fall grasses, and a ribbon bow, and you’ve got a big, beautiful decoration that looks like it came from a boutique.
Second, it’s beginner-friendly. Even if you’ve never made a swag before, you’ll be able to follow along and create something gorgeous on your very first try.
And finally, it’s seasonal but timeless. The grapevine base and fall grasses are classic elements that never go out of style. Plus, you can switch out the bow or even tuck in extra elements like faux pumpkins or berries to make it uniquely yours.
