Is there anything more festive than a bold, beautiful American flag wreath hanging on your front door? Whether you’re decorating for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, or just showing your patriotic pride all season long, this DIY deco mesh wreath is one of those projects that looks like it took a professional to make — but I promise, you can absolutely do this at home!

In this tutorial, I’m walking you through exactly how we made this gorgeous red, white, and blue wreath using the poof method with deco mesh. This is one of my favorite techniques because it creates that gorgeous, full, fluffy look that makes a wreath really stand out. Plus, every single supply we used came from Michaels, so it’s easy to grab everything in one trip (or one online cart… no judgment here!).

And if you’re more of a visual learner, don’t miss the full step-by-step video over on our YouTube channel! I’ll link it below so you can follow right along with us. Let’s get into it!

What You’ll Need

Before we dive in, here’s your complete supply list. Simple, affordable, and all from Michaels:

  • 1 — 14-inch metal work form (wreath frame)
  • 1 roll of red deco mesh
  • 1 roll of blue deco mesh
  • Pipe cleaners or wire (for securing)
  • 26-gauge floral wire (for attaching ribbon and mesh)
  • Star ribbon (with blue stars, about 14 inches per strip)
  • Striped ribbon (red stripes, about 14 inches per strip)
  • Wire cutters or scissors

That’s it! Seriously — this is such a beginner-friendly project, and the supplies are so easy to find.

Step 1: Set Up Your Work Form

Start with your 14-inch metal work form. This is your wreath frame, and it gives the entire project its shape and structure. The 14-inch size is perfect for a front door wreath — big enough to make a statement without being overwhelming.

Lay your frame flat on your work surface. You’ll be working in sections as you add the deco mesh, so it helps to visualize the clock positions on your frame. Think of it like a clock face, 12 o’clock at the top, 3 o’clock on the right, 6 o’clock at the bottom, and 9 o’clock on the left.

Step 2: Add the Blue Deco Mesh (9:00 to 12:00)

Here’s where the flag design really starts to take shape! We’re starting with the blue deco mesh, which will become the “union” (the blue star field) of your flag.

Using the poof method, attach your blue deco mesh to the frame starting at the 9 o’clock position and working around to the 12 o’clock position.

How to do the poof method:

  1. Cut a length of deco mesh and fold it into a loop or “poof” shape.
  2. Pinch the center of the loop and attach it to the frame using your 26-gauge floral wire, twisting tightly to secure.
  3. Continue adding poofs right next to each other, working from 9:00 around to 12:00, filling in that upper-left quarter of your wreath frame.
  4. Fluff and adjust each poof as you go to get that full, dimensional look.

The key is not to be shy with your mesh — the fuller, the better! Don’t be afraid to go back and add extra poofs if you feel like a spot looks a little thin.

Step 3: Fill In the Rest with Red Deco Mesh

Now comes the bold, beautiful red! Using the exact same poof method, fill in the remaining three-quarters of your wreath frame — from 12 o’clock all the way around back to 9 o’clock — using your red deco mesh.

This creates that classic flag look: blue in the upper-left corner, red filling the rest. As you work, try to keep your poofs consistent in size so the wreath looks even and full all the way around.

Once all your mesh is attached, step back and take a look. Go back in and fluff and adjust — honestly, this step makes such a big difference! Tuck, pull, and arrange until you love how it looks.

Step 4: Cut and Prep Your Ribbon Strips

Now it’s time to add that beautiful ribbon detail that really ties the whole flag theme together!

Cut your ribbons into 14-inch strips:

  • Star ribbon (blue stars) for the blue section
  • Striped ribbon (red stripes) for the red section

Here’s the detail that takes this wreath from pretty to polisheddovetail your ribbon tails. To do this, fold each ribbon strip in half lengthwise and cut a diagonal from the outer corner toward the fold. When you open it back up, you’ll have a beautiful V-shaped tail on each end. This technique gives the ribbon that professional, finished look — it’s such a simple trick and it makes a huge difference!

Step 5: Wire on the Ribbon

Using your 26-gauge floral wire, attach your ribbon strips to the wreath:

  • Wire the blue star ribbon strips into the blue mesh section, tucking and securing them so they peek out beautifully from the poofs.
  • Wire the striped red ribbon strips into the red mesh section the same way.

Twist the wire tightly on the back of the frame to secure, and then tuck any wire ends out of sight. Fluff the ribbon tails so they drape naturally and show off those gorgeous dovetailed ends.

Step 6: Final Fluffing and Finishing Touches

This is my favorite part — the final fluff! Go all the way around your wreath and adjust the mesh poofs, ribbons, and ribbon tails until everything looks full, even, and fabulous.

Step back, take a look, rotate it, hang it on the door — and admire your work! 🎉
